Who This Department Is For

This department is for practitioners who want to understand where their art came from, not only how to perform it. It is suited to those who find that technical skill deepens when placed in its proper historical and philosophical context.

Why This Department Exists

A technique performed without understanding its origin is easily lost or distorted over time. This department exists to preserve the people, decisions, and reasoning behind Kosho Ryu, so the art is carried forward with its meaning intact, not only its motion. Historical understanding is not a supplement to technical training. It is part of what makes the technical training correct.

Historical Resources

The Academy's growing archive of documents, photographs, commentary, and interviews connected to the teachers who shaped the tradition.

Recommended Progression

Students typically arrive in this department after completing some portion of the Core Curriculum, once the physical training raises questions about where these principles came from. Historical and Classical Studies often precedes Advanced Study, providing the context that makes Okuden and other advanced work easier to understand.
